Yun Dong-ju’s poem Counting the Stars at Night reflects both his personal emotions and the historical struggles of his time. In this work, the stars symbolize what was most precious to him, including his homeland, family, friends, ideals, and dreams.

Leaf by Leaf, Dream by Dream

This piece was inspired by a J.R.R. Tolkien novel with a painter who dreams of completing a beautiful tree. He becomes too focused on perfecting each individual leaf, and distracted by the needs of his neighbors, ultimately passes away without completing the tree.

The piece did not begin with notes, but with words. It was first filled with adjectives and images that captured the atmosphere I wanted to hold - uncertainty, floundering, ambiguity, joy, and embrace.

Echoes of Light captures the dynamic interplay of light through auditory expressions. It evokes the various movements of light, from gentle flickers to lively dances, shimmering glows, and the emergence of dark shadows as light cascades.

Crepuscule is a reflection on the memory of a sunset. Over the course of the piece, fluid arpeggiations to create a texture come in and out of focus creating a sense of timbral contrast.

Drawing inspiration from the ocean's rippling waves, reminiscent of limitless mountain ranges, this piece intertwines two separate artistic concepts: the utilization of couplets, often found in literature, and the incorporation of the open 5th, a technique primarily employed in traditional music across South Korea and other Asian countries.

This composition reflects the inspiration drawn from the story of the haenyeo (sea women) and their vocalizations called "sumbisori", the piece's title.

“How have you lived, and how will you live?” This is what I value most as an individual, so I try to pursue it, and this is why I always ask myself this matter. As I wrote this piece in the middle of the pandemic, this became a bigger question for me.

Since the founding of America, immigrants have sought to reach the shores of this land in hopes of realizing their destiny. In doing so, each has enriched this land beyond measure. As an immigrant, I wanted to contribute a piece of myself to this great country. My piece is an evolution of "America the Beautiful,” in which I hope to convey a soulful sense of urgency balanced with a bold sensitivity.

The title of this piece, Polifonia, means polyphony in Italian. I create clusters, one pitch set consist of 6 notes, where melodies come out through skillful accent playing. This idea is created for the vibraphone which allow polyphony of tones. A series of accents will overlap in a continuous rhythmic flow. As a result, it will sound out of temporality.

"Spring Overture" is inspired by the tragic events of the Korean War, which began on June 25, 1950. Three years of conflict ensued, only to be replaced by decades of tension and division as North and South waged an ongoing idealogical war. This piece attempts to capture the spirit of the ceasefire, represented by a warm spring breeze which holds the promise of new growth.
